There was a man who lives in a village and one day there was a large feast in his house. It was an auspicious occasion for him and his family. There were many guests who were invited and were present on the day of the festivities. In the middle of his living room, in the presence of the village priest a holy fire brunt as part of the ceremony’s traditional rituals. The puja was on in full swing, there were prayers being chanted and the invoking of divine energies.’
Suddenly, just as he was about to pour something into the holy fire, there was a snake that was passing the pit. On instinct, the man immediately caught the snake in an attempt to save him. But the second snake came into his grip, it reached out and bit him. Reflexively, the man’s grip loosened and the snake got dropped into the pit of fire. All the guests remained rooted to the spot watching the proceedings paralyzed in both fear and wonder.
Meanwhile, the man heedless of his own safety grabbed a stick, reaching into the fire picked up the snake again and this time managed to successfully cast him outside. Everyone was astounded and crowded around the man to see if he was alright. Most of the people were alarmed that regardless of his own protection, he had picked up the snake not once but twice. Despite being bitten by the snake, how was it that he dare to care for its safety they wondered. He looked around at his family and friends and calmly answered that he had learnt a very powerful lesson from that snake.
Even though he was trying to save the snake, it had still bitten him. That was the nature of the wild snake he said, and it would always remain so .but he on the other hand was a man with the ability to think beyond mere instinct , and he had the power to choose how to act. He explained that he could still act as per the nature of goodness, and that was simply a choice that he made. This story is a good example of how we often to react to situations in a rash manner without clarity of thought .No matter how dire or desperate the circumstances, we must train ourselves to hold onto the nature of goodness and not let go.
